Pete Pirone

Pete is a copywriter at Newell Brands in NYC, before that Macy’s. His book is mostly a mix of spec projects (always fun to see), including work for Whole Foods, Citi Bike, Squarespace, Snyder’s, GNC, and Cartoon Network (above). He’s also got separate pages dedicated to digital writing and personal projects—the latter focused on Walt Disney World, of which Pete is a huge fan. (As is MC.) “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun.” – Mary Poppins.

Sarah Weigl

Sarah is a copywriter/CD at McGarrah Jessee in Austin. Since her last post on MC (back on 10.29.14), she’s been busy. Whole bunch of new work up on her site, including videos for SkinnyPop (love the kick-Roomba vid), print for Yeti coolers (killer lines), and “Alexa, Apologize” (above), which is oh so timely at this particular moment. Love it.

Steve Swartz

Steve is an art director/writer/designer/CD in St. Louis. All kinds of cool projects on his site—including NASCAR (above). Love his “the me” page, too, including his description of what we do for a living and Menards Home Improvement stores: “For fun I carve out spaces in people’s heads for widgets and services in an over-crowded, post-need, first-world-problem marketplace. Just kidding. For real fun I shop at Menards. The answer to a question nobody asked. What if Cracker Barrel and Home Depot had a love child?” Nailed it.

Grant Smith

Grant is a freelance copywriter/CD in NYC. His portfolio was one of the first posted on MC way back on 12.16.09, almost 10 years ago (how has it been that long?). It was amazing then—and even more amazing now. His site is one long page of killer projects including New York Lotto, FedEx, BBC World, Toyota, AT&T, Red Stripe (classic), Monster, Mountain Dew, Footlocker, Fox Sports, Guinness, and Vonage (above). Stoked to have Grant back up on MC.

Seth Prandini

Seth is a freelance copywriter/ACD in Santa Monica. He spent the first 11+ years of his career at one shop, RPA, and since then has freelanced for a long list of agencies that would make any writer jealous, including Crispin, Goodby, 72andSunny, WONGDOODY, PHENOMENON, Saatchi, and 180LA. (Nice.) Be sure to check out his photo filter for The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (so simple) and his video for Google Play Music (above). Good times.

Shea Tullos

Shea is a senior copywriter at Cactus in Denver. Since his last post on MC (back on 02.05.16, almost exactly three years ago), he’s been busy—and making the most of the cool opportunities he’s getting at Cactus. Lots of new Colorado Lottery TV work and the commercial debut of KC’s Patrick Mahomes (who should have been in yesterday’s Super Bowl, ahem) for CommunityAmerica Credit Union. Definitely time for an update.

Chris Baker

eyepeople

Chris is a freelance copywriter/CD in NYC. His LinkedIn page states that he was named one of Wall Street Journal’s hottest freelance copywriters 2018, but that’s kind of hard to believe because it also states that he “hasn’t had shit in the Economist.” So. Not sure how one reconciles that. He did, however, come up with “Seeing Eye People” for Buzzfeed (above) which is both hilarious and cringeworthy, because it’s 100% that it’s going to be a real service someday. 110%.

Sara Muchnick

Sara is a new copywriter at DDB in San Francisco and a recent graduate of Miami Ad School. First thing you’ll notice is that she’s redesigned her Squarespace site to look like a Spotify page (above). How cool is that? Cool. Super interesting mix of projects on her site, including Kanye West’s platform for his 2020 run, U.S. of Ye. One can only imagine.

Charlotte is a senior content specialist at Hilton Grand Vacations in Orlando. From her This Is Me page: “I’m an Orlando-based content specialist and brand strategist with some PR know-how in my back pocket. Storytelling has been my jam since I was a kid. Telling the stories of industry leaders and small businesses is my bread and butter.” MC couldn’t sum it up better than that.

Nike: Dream Crazy

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fq2CvmgoO7I

It’s rare that MC posts a project rather than a portfolio. But every once in a while, something comes along that’s so well-written it just needs to go up. Still trying to track down the W+K copywriter who penned this one, will add the credit when she/he is found.

Back in the day, Janet Champ’s poetry for Nike Women (1988-93) is what inspired MC to get into copywriting in the first place. Thirty years later, it’s so cool to see W+K continuing to put writing out there, for the same brand, that really means something. Still setting the bar.

  • Mid-level to advanced knowledge of Spanish, ideally with a minor or double major in Spanish.

He’s got a killer portfolio site with all kinds of cool work including lots of entertainment projects from his time at Starz, but it was his stock photo headline site, Stoccopy, that was forwarded to MC from designer/CD at Noise13, Peter Judd (big ups, Peter!). Paul’s description at the top of the site: “Crappy stock headlines for crappy stock photos. You’re welcome.” So bad. So good. Links to both sites below.

Copywriter Wanted: Two by Four, Chicago

Hero_Job-Detail

Becky Stevenson, HR/Operations Director at Two by Four in Chicago, is on the hunt for a Copywriter/Great Idea Generator. From Two by Four:

“Is your brain a petri dish for great ideas? Do they bounce around in your head like pinballs on crack? If so, perhaps you’d like to see them come to fruition as a Great Idea Generator: Copywriter at Two by Four. We’re in the market for a kick-ass writer – someone who not only gets it, but does it. An inventive, surprising, passionate thinker, someone who can take a strategy and conceptually turn it on its ear. A self-motivated, self-aware self-starter, with an understanding of mediums from television to web, print to guerilla – and everything in between. Oh, and did we mention you’ll be doing this at breakneck speed? Buckle your seatbelt. If you think you’ve got what it takes, give us a shout. You may be the right writer for the job.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop fantastic creative concepts, seen through to execution
  • Come at things from refreshingly unique angles; don’t just show us the expected stuff: surprise us, excite us, wow us, and make us happy we hired you
  • Do create work that makes our clients, the agency and your parents proud
  • Don’t be a prima donna; if you are, trust us – you won’t last very long here
  • Raise your hand when you’re not busy. Volunteer. Engage. Immerse yourself. Help out wherever you can. Make yourself indispensable. We’ll notice, you’ll benefit.
  • Depending on experience level, present work to clients; in any event, you’ll be working towards that goal – we don’t want you to go to every client meeting
  • Keep track of your hours and do your time sheets on time; yes, this matters
  • Oh, and other thing: we start at 8:30; yes, this matters, too – set your alarm accordingly
  • Roll up your sleeves, put on your thinking cap and dive headfirst into new business – we’ve won a ton of new biz this year alone. Want an opportunity to grow? This is it.
  • Stand out, but fit in. This is one helluva fun place to work, with a really cool agency culture. Be a part of it.

Qualifications / Skills Required for this Position:

  • Enough experience to let us know that you know what you’re doing.
  • A really nice body of work.
  • Being a grown-up. We don’t want to have to watch over you all the time, and you don’t want that either. If you can’t work without supervision, this won’t work.
  • A general understanding of how things work in advertising, including radio production and tv production, print production, web development, etc.”
