Dave is a freelance copywriter/ACD in Portsmouth, NH. Since his last post on MC (way back on 03.05.14), he’s been on quite a journey—including starting his own boutique agency, Love & The Machine, and a 3-year stint as an in-house ACD at Bauer Hockey. (Don’t miss his “Mayor of Boomtown” and “The Women’s Movement Never Stops” campaigns for Bauer.) Definitely time for an update.
This is so cool. Sarah Latz, Director of Education for Chicago Portfolio School, reached out to MC to help spread the word about their new scholarship for Black creatives. From CPS:
“Everyone knows that the advertising industry is severely lacking in diversity. Only 2% of creative departments identity as Black. We think the path to a more inclusive advertising and design industry starts with more talented Black creatives considering portfolio school as an option.
That’s we created The Pipeline Fund, a full-tuition scholarship to help more talented Black creatives to attend Chicago Portfolio School.
We’re matching every donation made to the Pipeline Fund, dollar for dollar. To donate to The Pipeline Fund and invest in a more inclusive advertising industry, visit the scholarship GoFundMePage.

Can’t wait to see where Kimmy lands!
Big thanks to Sarah Latz, Director of Education at Chicago Portfolio School, for sending MC the latest CPS grads sites. So much great work! Below are links to all Spring 2020 grad portfolio sites, plus a note from Sarah.
“Chicago Portfolio School has been offering a free class to undergraduate students who now have to finish their academic year from home. Jeff Epstein, the founder of Chicago Portfolio, leads the online class and discussion of more than 70 college students from around the country. Advertising professors from around the country helped spread word of the class, and students from all of the Big 10 campuses, and state schools like Florida, Oregon, Arizona, as well as smaller schools, are registered.
Recruiters from Leo Burnett, plus veteran copywriters, art directors and strategists have virtually visited to talk about how to get a job and create award-winning campaigns.
For now, the class is ongoing, and seniors (creative and non-creative majors) are still welcome to register for the online class. Additionally, the school’s allowing anyone to virtually “sit in” on a number of other classes they offer.
Reach out to Sarah at sarah@chicagoportfolio.com for more information.”
Nick is a new copywriter and a new Chicago Portfolio School graduate. His Pizza Hut packaging redesign is what the world needs now. The best thing about ordering pizza tonight is having leftover pizza tomorrow. So why not include reheating instructions inside the box?
Julia is a new copywriter and a new graduate of Chicago Portfolio School. With her Rent the Runway Airbnb partnership project, “you can rent your vacation home and the wardrobe you need for the trip.” Um, yes please. Such a good idea.
Eric is a new copywriter and a new graduate of Chicago Portfolio School. The first project in his portfolio for Golden Road Brewing brings celebrities, stolen by Hollywood, back to their hometowns—with an apology and a gift. Craft beer. Apology accepted.
Solomiya is a new copywriter and a new Chicago Portfolio School grad. (Big congrats!) The first project on her site is “Equal Payday,” using the classic Payday candy bar to promote equal pay for women. (Also seen in Hilary Stevens book.) Super smart. Also, candy bar. Win win.
John is a copywriter/ACD who recently moved to Portland, formerly at mcgarrybowen in Chicago. His site features projects that you have to see to believe. “All I Really Want For Christmas” by Kool-Aid Man and Lil Jon (above). An 11-hour Sausage Yule Log video for Jimmy Dean. Putting a new cord on an EGO String Trimmer while plummeting 120mph toward Earth. And that’s just three projects. Can’t wait to see where John lands!
Daniel is a new copywriter in Chicago and a recent graduate of Chicago Portfolio School. (Love seeing student portfolios.) At the time of this post, his site features six spec projects for brands including McDonald’s, Motel 6, Megabus, Illinois Lottery, and Big Brothers Big Sisters. His campaign for Goldfish, highlighting the cafeteria trade value of Goldfish for kids, is super fun. Can’t wait to see where Daniel lands!
Brandon is a new copywriter and a recent graduate of Chicago Portfolio School. While he has no strong opinions on the Oxford comma, he does about using a parenthetical (learn more by reading his resume via his About Me page). Brandon’s portfolio features spec projects for big brands like Monster, Tumblr, StubHub, plus Acorns and Which Wich (featured above). Can’t wait to see where he lands!
Conner is a new copywriter in Los Angeles, a recent graduate of Chicago Portfolio School, and currently interning at BBH in LA. Love to see a new copywriter’s book filled with real-deal headlines—and Conner’s site has a ton of them for clients like Harley-Davidson, Dunkin’ (funny idea with misspelled Starbucks cups), Omaha Steaks (above), Jeni’s Ice Cream (super cute idea), plus a long copy campaign for ALDI. Can’t wait to see where Conner lands!

She’s got spec projects on her site for clients like Starbucks (above), Harley-Davidson, 4OCEAN, Tumblr, Unbound Babes, Framebridge, and LUSH Cosmetics. Also, be sure to check out her photography page, “The Pics.” It’s like getting a copywriter and a photographer with one hire. Can’t wait to see where she lands!
Sophia is a new copywriter and a recent graduate of Chicago Portfolio School. (Congrats, Sophia!) She’s got an adorable campaign for Kraft Singles in her portfolio (above), celebrating small milestones in the life of a kid, which never actually feel small when you’re a kid. In addition to copywriting, Sophia also has a talent for naming colors. Check out her “Colors” page to view “Caramel macchiato with oat milk. Not almond.” and “Dehydrated pee.” Nice.

Her portfolio at the time of this posting features five projects for Everlane, Beefeater Gin, Svalbard Tourism (got to be a first for MC), Azteca Tortillas, and Garnier Fructis (above). From her About page: “What I like most about copywriting is the research you get to do beforehand.” Agreed.
Patrick is a copywriter/CD in Denver. All kinds of cool video projects on his site, including work for Penguin Publishing, The Clinton Foundation, ibotta, Madison Bumgarner for Ford, and a super smart/simple campaign for Sears Optical (above). Dig it.
Bari is a copywriter at DigitasLbi in San Francisco. His site is loaded with gaming projects for titles like Shadows of the Colossus, The Last Guardian, Until Dawn, and Horizon: Hero Dawn – The Watchers. For the latter, Bari’s team brought the game to life by literally bringing Watchers to life at E3 (above). Fingers crossed he gets to borrow it for Halloween.
